To make Cognos work sensibly, it needs firefox to associate the adobe acrobat plugin with the various pdf mime types.
When you go to the firefox Preferences menu, and to the Applications pane, there are a batch of three “PDF” content types, each of which you carefully look at and conclude have been correctly associated with “Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)”. And still it doesn’t work (the hyperlinks within the top level documents don’t link to anywhere useful).
The answer turns out to be the fourth “PDF” content type, found by scrolling down half a page or so in the Preferences/Applications pane …
