If you have an icon in your MacOS Finder sidebar (in the “Places” section) that corresponds to a resource that no longer exists (eg a network share that has disappeared), it becomes surprisingly difficult to remove it (the right-click menu on it no longer has an option to remove it, and it can’t be dragged).
The solution turns out to be to hold down the command (clover) key while dragging it.
Of course, the next question is “drag it where?”. It turns out that the red “no entry” sign in the top bar of the Finder window is the answer; I’m not quite sure why Apple have used that symbol for a function where I’d expect a trashcan/wastebasket symbol, but hey ho …
