Sitting all day isn’t very good for you; standing all day isn’t all that great either (I’ve tried it for a few months, and am not convinced it was that good an idea). The latest variant in trying to make day-long computer use less damaging is motorised sit/stand desks (ones that can trivially change height to suit either posture, quickly enough that one can switch regularly).
Ikea have just produced the comparatively cheap (£425/£445 incl VAT) Bekant sit/stand desk (there are also some more expensive variants with larger and more interestingly shaped desktops).
Stability/solidity is fine, even at full height
The height range should deal with anyone up to about 6’6″ / 200cm – I’m 6’2″/182cm and when standing use it over 20cm below its highest setting.
The size (120cm x 80cm) is moderate, but in many ways that’s an advantage – it should fit neatly in the space of a standard small-ish office desk, and it’s entirely self-contained within that area.
It’s not designed to take huge loads, but normal desktop contents (monitor, keyboard, mouse, papers) are trivial for it.
[ I’ve got one at home; I’ll see how things go with it, and with my back, before thinking about my CUED office . I have no idea if IKEA’s presence on the purchasing suppliers database means we can actually buy from them … ]
